Capturing water
Jeannie Phan
Sometimes, the subject you’re planning to paint will dictate the technique you use to paint it. In this example, called Pool Day, wet-on-wet technique proved ideal for capturing the fluid motion of water in a swimming pool. All that was required was confident and, importantly, quick brushwork. A distinctive feature of this painting is the bend in the pool. The artist was commissioned to illustrate a newspaper article about incorporating swimming into a daily routine—the upright section of the pool suggests it can be an uphill struggle.
The wet-on-wet technique was laid down in stages to allow for the “fold” line in the water. Ultramarine blue mixed with a little cadmium red produced the color of water in the swimming pool. After this, gouache paint was used to render the swimmers and the pool’s tiled edge. Its opacity made it possible for the swimmers to be painted over the blue, although this does create slight differences (look closely at the man doing a backward dive). Lastly, fine red and white line brushwork sharpens the details.
